Congratulations America !

January 20, 2009

and all of you who made it possible…I congratulate you as a human being,as a citizen of the world. I, who will sleep a little easier at night thinking, no!! knowing…knowing that one more land is in safe hands, one more addition has been made to a ‘world of peace’ and that people of that land who will also perhaps sleep easier tonight than any other night.

And yet….yet, somewhere deep down inside ,I envy you…. The ‘Indian‘ in me envies you.

What must it feel like ? What was it that you felt today? What did it feel like to hope? To dream? For,didn’t you dream?…Standing there on a biting ,chilly winter morning ,hands cold, feet numb and eyes hopeful? Sitting in your homes, restaurants,in offices….and all across America…all across the world…Be honest…Didn’t you dream just a little??

You ,who are learning to unclench a fist ,a fist that you clenched when you were bleeding and hurt. You who have now woken up from that nightmare .You, who stood united in the face of terror. You,who did not let it define you and all that you are.You ,who have pledged to walk a different path today.

And we, who have just learnt how to clench a fist.We also bled,so many times and so much.. and…we are still bleeding..from so many wounds in so many places….
We, who feel rudderless and lost.
Where do we channelise this rage, this anger? How do we move on? Tell us…..How did you?

You, an America which has chosen a leader , a man who looks like he could and he would lead you to everything that you have ever dreamt of.Like he would willingly slay dragons for you, move mountains ,stop oceans……How did you find him? How? Did you go looking for him? How? This most of all..This,you have to tell us.Tell us the secret too…..

No one needs it more than us you see. Here, where they speak of finding our own Obama. Which is true and right…For,he or she could come from anywhere right?
But here the problem with us you see, is that we follow everything to a T.

If yours has come from the minority then ours must too. Because we ,you see, think that it’s all a formula,a potion, a ‘ghutti‘ that our grandmothers and mothers made….and it only came with fixed ingredients. One knew it was effective and still bitter but couldn’t change the ingredients. And so, we too are searching and searching but coming up short.
What? ???? You’ll help us? Gosh!!!thank you so much!! Candidates??

Okay, first one is ‘Mayawati’ being hailed as our own ‘Obama‘ and she…What? What is it you are saying?Okay…okay… big deal so what if she is corrupt? So what if she seeks to play the minority card? What?? Can’t hear you..Oh! That!!!The ‘chanda’ thing? She also murders?…or gets people murdered? Obama is not corrupt, has never gotten people murdered?….Okay, okay! lets scratch her name.Happy now?

What about Modi? Very ,very progressive people say..and very effective….and he lives so austerely too.He is firm, promises to deal with all our ‘enemies’ with a firm hand.Surely he is the right one.And he’s from the BJP.Great party all nationalistic and stuff! They will really protect India and all…
What???? Oh! that…Babri?and that one in 2002?..But that happened so many years ago…!Come on..Can’t we forgive and forget?I mean ,he didn’t even have a direct hand in it !

No???…ohhh! Okay……aren’t you being a tad too finicky???
What?? What did you say? Do we want an ‘Obama‘ or not? Jeez ,what kind of a question is that??? Of course we do…

How about Rahul baba? He is good,he has pedigree too, you see rather like a blue blooded prince….and..
What did you say? Oh yes,we don’t have princes anymore…Yes,the estates have been dissolved..and the kingdoms too…
But you see,we are rather big on blue blood here.On pedigree. And on Dynasty.and see…..He dresses well too…all dapper and all…Kind of like Savile Row suits and he spends his days and nights living with the dalits…he spends time with them, eats with them, lives in their huts….isn’t he amazing? Isn’t he so oh…whats the word here…yes..’Egalitarian’? He speaks impeccable Angrezi I tell you. Not a word mispronounced. No ,Sir! Not one! A bit naive maybe, but really cute:) And he’s from The Congress! All secular and shit this one is….Really man! A more Seculah party is not to be found evah!!! Congress defines Secularism.Yes sir, they do..!!!

What?????Oh! 84???and Babri again??? Come on! How do you remember all these years when we don’t?and they were just in power!!They also didn’t have a direct hand in it!! Come on !Give Rahul Baba a break na!

What?? Experience? What is that? No, no seriously….What IS that? Here ,we are not very big on experience.Actually not big at all.Jeez man ,if we wait for experience he’s going to be like Atalji before he’s even ready. And then you know what will happen?More rounds of ‘Yeh Theek nahi hai’. *Giggle* Come on,we would rather see our crown prince sit on the Rajgaddi while he can still walk..

What? Do we want to see a novice heading our country? Well…now that you ask..there already have been so many novices..his father for one…and all of th…..

WHAT???? No?? Absolutely no? Do we want an Obama? Of course we do! What do you think I have been asking for so long???? You are really testing my patience buddy!!!

And what are you taking those deep breaths for? Don’t !Don’t !Okay! peace and non-violence man!

Listen buddy I give up!!!!!
And…the rest of the choices are very limited. Oh really?? ? You want to know what the choices are? Okay if you insist! Don’t say I didn’t warn you! *mutters*

*Deep breath*umm…CPM?? Hey! Hey! don’t go red in the face! They are on everyone’s side! They really care for the masses! I swear..they always talk about all ‘Bourgeosie and shit ya know?” Awesome they are!! They talk all serious shit man and all heavy words like ‘Proletariat’,’Capitalism,’Commodification,Division of Labour and all…

Why….they didn’t even let that Tata chap make anything! How cool is that? 😀
WHAT?? Do we want to make progress or not? Of course we do…
They are ALSO not an option?
You are seriously cracked up man!!

You know what? I don’t even believe that you have an Obama! Yup!I don’t! You know why? Coz somebody like that doesn’t exist! You used all that computer graphics and all to make…..generate….whatever….him…!! Yes sir! thats what you did! And don’t you lie to us now….Tell us the truth! He doesn’t exist does he? What??
You think we are fools? You think we’ll believe that someone like this exists?

Of course, some here already say that it’s all a big hype and when you guys wake up,it’s going to be harsh….real harsh…..
That when he stumbles, you will too….
When his dreams collapse, yours will die too..
That when you try to fly, you’ll fall to the ground….hard…

But I sometimes wonder…..wonder…what if you don’t?
What if you don’t fall?
What if he takes you flying far into the horizon and even beyond? There…..where even the eyes cannot see?
Is it possible??

*psssttt* Please tell us where you found him…Please………..

Please………..

Great post. And by the way, answering your question at the end, it is the system they have in place, which finds out and promotes the right candidates and rejects those who fall short. We are still a long long way from having a system which would throw up people like him in power.

    brilliant article as usual…
The search will continue… and I dont think Rahul bhaiya is any good…… 😛
Three cheers to Mammohan… let him lead us as long as he possibly can….

and the search will only end when the common citizen thinks that politics is a good word…… unlike the trash it ahs become now…

America does not worry about – what if, if then, why – they go out and do what they are – they are bullish in everything they do and believe in themselves – a fiery confidence that can light up the darkest night.

Awesome post, post swearing in 🙂

Watched it live, the final part, and came away feeling, well, lucky them! I mean, they dared to dream and less than 50 years of Dr Martin Luther King Jr.’s sharing of his, it has become a dream come true.

Do we have a dream at all? Or simply rhetoric? Do we care, I mean the millions, outside, who rules? Have become so cynical, and jaded with the Governance, the archetypal politician, the self same at all levels? If that sort of change must come, we cannot go hunting outside of our own selves. The buck stops here. With us. We must make that difference. We can make that difference. For us. For a worthy existence. If we so wish.

As Richard Bach says, in his book Illusions,

There is no such thing as a problem without a gift for you in its hands. You seek problems because you need their gifts.

He does go on and say that you might need to work for it however 🙂

I’d like to second the opinion that Sagarone has shared about their system being different, perhaps it keeps sifting and winnowing till the right persons come to the fore. And here, any Jaan, Jaaffer, Janaardhan can simply come, convince, and carry off the title. As a populace we are way too gullible too, the masses that hold the ballot punching finger 🙂

Finally, I guess that it’s also because they know that it’s ok to fail, and as Obama said, they know how to pick themselves up and dust themselves off and carry on with the job! No matter what it is, a personal scandal, a national disaster, an international blame-game… which we for all our pride, our false vanity and our double standards could never do, unless we, each of us, could!

India does not finally need an Obama. She needs Indians who know all of this, and then dare to make a collective dream, slowly but surely an inevitable truth!

I guess there is way too much rhetoric here, just like the politicians :), but well I know you will understand!!

    Loved reading this one too!

Beautifully written. Yes, the “Indian” in all of us envies America that has once again shown that it knows how to find and elevate the best to the top.

“What if he takes you flying far into the horizon and even beyond? There…..where even the eyes cannot see?” That is what Americans have put him in the White House for…this is the triumph of their hope over fear. Here, it is the fear factor that still prevails.

” A fiery confidence that can light up the darkest night”, as Anrosh says, is what has helped them find Obama…we will find him when we develop that too. And as Obama’s impossible, vertical rise from nowhere shows, it can and will happen suddenly…

Do we have a dream at all? Or simply rhetoric? Do we care, I mean the millions, outside, as to who rules? Have we become so cynical, and jaded with the Governance, the archetypal politician, the self same at all levels?

Yes,I suppose they do ,don’t they? What an absolutely amazing system if, for a Bush it throws up an Obama too!!!When will we have it I wonder?A complete overhaul is needed but how?

    Ajit:-:D..*grinning like a maniac*
As usual eh?Won’t let you forget this one!lol!
Yeah,I don’t think Rahul is good ,not now at any rate..
Yes,when politics becomes a ‘good’ word..very true…right now it’s more like a dirty puddle one carefully hops over on the way to work…feel really gloomy at times like this..

Anrosh:-I am so glad to see you here…been a lurker on yours and reading rather quietly..:)
    Very nicely said…
”America does not worry about – what if, if then, why – they go out and do what they are – they are bullish in everything they do and believe in themselves – ..”

Yes,as Usha says we get bogged down in rhetoric…we believe in empty promises…but we do not believe in ourselves…
‘being bullish’…yes, that about sums it up..

”a fiery confidence that can light up the darkest night.”
    Beautifully,beautifully said…..

Usha Pisharody:-Thank you..:)Yes,I also felt exactly the same…’Lucky them’ was the dominant emotion…Yes,50 years! Amazing isn’t it?To think that there are generations who have as Obama says ‘come from the cotton fields’ to this new belief…those of that generation who saw the swearing in ..can’t even begin to imagine what they must have felt….
As Ajit says the change will come when we stop thinking politics is a dirty word…
And as you put it so concisely…
’’ If that sort of change must come, we cannot go hunting outside of our own selves. The buck stops here. With us. We must make that difference. We can make that difference. For us. For a worthy existence. If we so wish.’’

Couldn’t have put it more aptly..

    Have we become jaded?
It would certainly seem so…..Do we now know for sure what we have known in our hearts since years…that politicians are not really humans anymore…not ‘one of us’…not from the masses…and if they are they certainly become celestial beings pretty soon…judging by the kind of crap that comes out of their mouth ,it would seem so…and it cuts across parties…all of them ,the same addlepated idiots…from Congress to BJP to CPM…’lipstick powder ladies’/a dog won’t go’…you name it…verbal diarrhoea is what they suffer from..
Soo in love with their own voices…that ours don’t reach them…..

‘’And here, any Jaan, Jaaffer, Janaardhan can simply come, convince, and carry off the title. As a populace we are way too gullible too, the masses that hold the ballot punching finger :)’’
Yes,that’s our boon AND our bane…Beautifully said..Are we gullible ?oh yes!Even the so called educated elite….we forget that there might be right individuals in the wrong parties…indeed even without a ‘party’ at all…

Pick ourselves and dust off ? Oh yes!for sure! That’s what we do every single time!We just forget the lessons that come with the fall…
‘’India does not finally need an Obama. She needs Indians who know all of this, and then dare to make a collective dream, slowly but surely an inevitable truth!’’

I agree..completely…different country, different needs…But one still gets greedy ,if only for a minute..:)
    No,definitely not rhetoric..:)just words from the heart…

PS:-thank you for the link to Richard Bach!Do you realize what you have done by giving yet more quotes to a quote maniac?:D

And did you mean at the beginning that should do a post on swearing in?:)

    Vinod Sir:-Thank You:)
Yes, we are only NOW beginning to realize what terror means…and they meanwhile have risen above it.….. As Anrosh says so beautifully.. ”a fiery confidence that can light up the darkest night.”
    Yes,true,they have all of that…
(and really after years of Bush and penance maybe they do deserve Obama completely):)
WE have that confidence too….but it takes leaders of men and women to lead, someone who makes us believe when we falter…

And really even if any individual can rise above this..…here……in India….let go of past baggage, and make us believe again…Then I would overlook follies, foibles et al……But it will be a huge, gigantic task…Who will rise to it?
Keeping my fingers crossed and in another few years maybe we’ll celebrate too..

    Gopinath’s ”Artickles”:-Thank you so much..:)Coming from you the ‘Artickler’that means a lot..:)
yes,as limited as my political knowledge is,there are certain truths that even I cannot escape…
    Thanks again…

I really think, that for an Obama – we need people who really really care about the country to join politics. And I think, the very least , we as everyday citizens can do is -atleast vote in the next elections.. We just need to keep ‘hope’ alive!

Yes we crave for a good leader like him in India. Who can speak well and not make a mockery of the nation. We Franky lack leaders and have abundance of Netas. Either ways BO is a fresh change after GWB. Hope he does well for all the nations. Hope he actually execute what ever he said. Frighting fact though is he was sponserped by some really big corporate names: AT&T Inc,Lockheed Martin, Anheuser-Busch, Amgen Inc, Wells Fargo, Google Inc, Ford Motor Co, Motorola Inc, PepsiCo Inc, Coca-Cola Co.

And it would interesting to know what different people would perceive the Next Great Leader of India as . Should we make a tag out of it ? If yes , then I tag you . 🙂

True! we copy without reason. We copy the minority part but we don’t ask why Obama won and not Jesse Jackson who ran twice and lost. Both from minority.

Yes! the Indian in me envies US and also salutes the people for choosing their leader. Sadly! us Indians don’t have that privilege:(.

And never spout nonsense ; and the only thing you have managed so far to do to my head is , make it think, reflect and ponder more . 🙂 And I should have been the first one to do it , but my “karma” (read , my job as software coolie) is keeping my really busy these days .

And History is a great subject . I used my history text book as soporific in my school days . But later , in college, I realized how incredibly important it is . How easily can you screw with the psyche of a race or a nation by screwing with their History . And how objectivity is so important when it comes to History . If you don’t mind telling me , who is your favourite historical character from the Indian Freedom Struggle . And if it is Gandhiji , then who else, apart from him .

Apart from Gandhiji (to a certain extent only)….the other leaders would have to be C.Rajagopalachari or ‘Rajaji’ ,Ram Prasad Bismil ,Sardar Patel and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad….The list is not yet complete because so many leaders were not prominent and hence did not come into the light..so keep trying to get my hands on new works..:)
    And oh yes!Shastriji and JP…in a more modern context…:)

And err.. quite a chit chat goin on here..:)

    Balvinder Singh:-Thank you so much..
    I liked yours a lot…:)

Yes,I too used history in the same manner in school:D
But in college oh man!We had many great professors but this one lady really stood out..!!Awesome is the word I would use for her!
I had a boring teacher as well in school . He just used to read off the text and that was it . Chapter over . But there was one very special teacher who taught us the way History should be taught . She made it interesting for all of us . So good was she , that even the back-benchers were eager to answer . I discovered the importance of History later in life , in college , thanks to friends , and my own curiosity .

“But Objectivity is itself debated..Can a historian be truly objective? Can history be truly objective?….loads of doubts and debates we used to have back then…and still..:) “

True . There has to be an optimum level I guess . One has to be objective while being objective , I guess 🙂

Thanks for telling me . My favourites are Netaji Bose , Mahapurush Bhagat Singh , Chandrashekhar Azad and Sardar Patel . And as you said , there were many unsung heroes , so the list can never be complete .
