An Open Letter to the State Government from the Women of Karnataka

January 28, 2009

An Open letter to the Government of Karnataka….

Excerpt

What is the culture that these goon organisations are claiming to protect? Is beating and molesting women in public places in order to control and make them conform to their own perverted notion of decency a traditional Indian value? How is this any different from the moral policing that the Taliban does in Pakistan and Afghanistan and what right wing Islamic groups do in Kashmir?

Is it a traditional Indian value to burn women at the rate of almost 3 – 4 women a day in the city of Bangalore in cases of “unnatural” deaths of women in marriage? Or preventing them from even being born in the increasing incidence of sex selective abortions, such that the sex ratios are becoming seriously imbalanced in regions like Mandya. Or selling women into the trafficking industry or marriage market from poverty struck regions in North Karnataka to states like Haryana where the female population is on the decline. Perhaps the moral police think that practices like dowry, female foeticide and trafficking of women are part of the same glorious tradition like Sati, the burning of widows on the husband’s pyre, which we remember, a former BJP Chief Minister upheld as part of Hindu culture.

Indeed… I do hope it is read, and the process of banning them begins somewhere. Exemplary action is needed with at least one of them.. nd the rest should follow!

Now the latest News is this Ravan Sena has some connections with the Abhinav Bharat organisation.
So BJP is fighting to provide excuses for them …
But at least a terrorist act against citizens is more powerful than a terrorist act against mere women! This nation respects women!

Usha Pisharody:-Yes,it definitely should be..and there should be the most severe punishment given…

Indian Home Maker:-Yes,IHM this news has been flashing on our tv screens …..A terrorist act against so many people will atleast be taken seriously ,considering how any crime against women is not considered anything big in this country…
This nation does not respect women that much has become pretty clear now…
The next step is to ensure that these goons are punished by hook or by crook….
Also (this again might be twisted logic)but if all the saffron parties are hounded for abetting terrorist activities then atleast they will find it difficult to breathe and will try and walk the line…

I am glad people are united though I still am not comfortable with the word feminist. It should be women activists :).

Thatot the point. Hope this is read. I wish we could sign too. Link all our blogs and stand united. In the past couple of days I have read at least 20+ blogs raising voice against these goons.

    Pixie:-Welcome!:)
Yes,I am sure the letter will be read if only because of the media pressure….don’t think that nothing is happening ….it is people like you and me who can absolutely refuse to let an issue die down…
in India ,even with as pathetic a condition as women are in ,it is the media which keeps an issue alive…which issues?the ones we ,the public talk of…..a lot can happen..keep writing, keep blogging..keep talking with others around you…

And thanks for that ice compliment :)!off to your blog now..:)

Solilo:-Yes, a lot of people are not comfortable with it…..:)
As I said the letter will be ‘read’ if only on prime time tv and will get media attention….will the govt do something?I don’t know…but the pressure of the media plays a huge role…lets hope something comes out of it…
