Srilankan Cricketers attacked

March 2, 2009

Update 1:-Latest reports coming from Pakistan indicate that All SriLankan Cricketers are out of danger. The reports have not been confirmed yet.

The players reported injured are Thilan Samaraweera, Kumar Sangakkara, Ajantha Mendis, Mahela Jayawardene, Tharanga Paranavithana and Chaminda Vaas.

Pacer Chaminda Vaas, too, was carried off in a stretcher. Samaraweera has been shot at.
More reports are awaited.

At least five members of the Sri Lankan cricket team have been injured in a shooting incident in the Pakistani city of Lahore, a Sri Lankan minister says.

Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge told the BBC said that early reports said indicated that the injuries to five players and a coach were minor.

The incident happened when unidentified gunmen fired on a convoy carrying Sri Lankan and Pakistani cricketers.

Unconfirmed reports say some policemen had been killed by the shooting.

Sri Lankan media reports said two of the players including Thilan Samaraweera, who scored a double century in the ongoing Test match, have been taken to hospital.

The convoy was carrying Pakistani and Sri Lankan cricketers to the Gaddafi stadium, which is hosting a Test match between the two sides. The third day of play in the Second Test was scheduled to begin.

“It appears that our team bus was targeted on the way to the match. It appears that four of our cricketers have been injured and taken to the hospital,” a Sri Lankan cricket official told an Indian TV channel from Colombo.

TV pictures showed two gunmen with backpacks on the road where the incident happened.

An eyewitness told Reuters news agency that three policemen and a traffic warden had been killed in the incident.

Shop owner Ahmed Ali said two policemen had been driving behind the team bus when the attack happened.

“It was a very heavy firing and I heard at least two explosions at the time,” an eyewitness told Reuters.

Pakistani invited Sri Lanka to tour after India’s cricket team pulled out of a scheduled cricket tour following the deadly November attacks in the western Indian city of Mumbai.

Based on eye witness accounts,it appears that the intention of the terrorists was to kill the entire Sri Lankan team by blowing up the bus .The terrorists were armed with rocket launchers ,grenades, rifles and pistols.
Six Pakistani Security personnel laid down their lives while protecting the SriLankan team.
Update 2
The Sri Lankan team will be evacuated by helicopter and taken to the airport, from where the entire team will catch a flight to Dubai from where they will head home to Sri Lanka.
The priority right now is on getting the Sri Lankan team out of Pakistan as soon as possible.Army helicopters are circling the Gaddafi Stadium right now where a few Sri Lankan players are still waiting.
It is an unreal sight to watch a helicopter land on the cricket green of the Gaddafi stadium and watch the players getting into the chopper. What madness has been unleashed?

Update 3
The entire Sri Lankan team has been kept at an army base camp. Two players who are under a 48 hour observation under doctors have prompted the whole team to stay behind. The Sri Lankan team has refused to fly out unless each member of the Sri lankan contingent is safe and travels together to Dubai. The assistant coach of the SL team has been injured too.An umpire too Ahsaan Raza(fourth umpire)has been critically injured. He is under observation as well.
Update 4:-
According to some reports ,two SriLankan Army Choppers have returned home to SriLanka with the entire Sri Lankan Contingent. These reports however are not confirmed.
Another report says that the Sri Lankan Contingent has been picked up and is now headed for Abu Dhabi from where it will then head to Sri Lanka.
Doctors are unsure as of now,as to whether these injuries will affect the future of these cricketers. Their careers seem to be at risk with reports of some players having recieved
major (not life threatening)injuries on their hands and legs.
ICC is expected to take a decision regarding the 2011 World Cup within the next 48 hours.
Update 5:-
According to the latest reports six Sri Lankan players have been injured, seven security personnel have been killed in the line of duty…4 more security personnel are in a critical condition at the hospital, the Assistant coach of the SL team and the fourth umpire Ahsaan raza are still at the hospital as well.
The blame game has started in some quarters already with one Pakistani minister blaming India for the incident.
Meanwhile ,security has been beefed up for the cricket teams of India and New Zealand .
Update 6 and the last update:-
The Sri Lankan team has just left Pakistani soil and is homeward bound.
Meanwhile, sources say that the ICC has taken a final decision saying that no world cup matches will be held in Pakistan.

Cricinfo’s Sri Lanka editor Charlie Austin said there was some explosion before the firing started. He also said that skipper Mahela Jayawardene had also been hit in his ankle.

Chaminda Vaas was also injured and he was seen being taken on a stretcher.

The Pakistan team has been stopped from reaching Gadaffi and are being taken back to the hotel.

According to reports reaching here, the area has been cordoned

    How terrible…….what audacity????

Thank God the cricketers are safe but just imagine each injury is going to take them months to recover & a bowler like Chaminda Vaas is supposed to be hit in the ankle. That is going to take so much physiotherapy & time.
And lets not ignore the mental stress:-(

Thats it now….just watch the repercussions….Pakistan Cricket will suffer greatly with this low blow……nobody is going to take this lightly.

If one goes to play in a terror factory which produces nothing but terrorists and human bombs, what other treatment one can expect be it the cricketers or any other guest of honour on thier land. It is high time that the world declares Pak as a trrorist state, not only in letter but also in spirit.

Abhilasha, thanks for reporting. I just heard the news by word of mouth in the office. Your post has confirmed that.

What we are seeing is the disintegration of Pakistan in slow motion. What is worrisome is that India will have to face some of the fallout as well. A Pandora’s Box has been opened up by short sighted rulers in Pakistan and the whole region will have to face the consequences.

Good you caught this happening news it as it was taking place and given a fine as-it-was-happening account

This attack was always coming, just as Mumbai 26/11 was. Just four days back I had written a post whose headline spoke of all cylinders of Pakistan being on fire. It appears that not just the engine but the whole vehicle has caught fire. People have still not realised that beyond a point, things start moving faster than you can catch them. We are not far for there.

Rflections:-yes the sheer audacity of it all!and yet knowing how things are in Pakistan this seems to be along expected lines in a way though no one could have thought that such an attack in the heart of one of its major cities was possible..

This is really sad! What do they want to achieve with this shooting? Unless Pakistan becomes bold and tries to control all tribes in its land, there is no hope for them. They should become bold like what Srilanka did this year to the LTTE.

Getting off all the guns abandoned by the Russians from its land should also be the number one priority.

    God bless them!

Saw this news last night just before going to bed and then thought oh! that was expected.

Isn’t it sad that such things are now predictable?

I think World Cricket is dead in Pakistan and may be Sri Lanka too. After 26/11 England toured us and nothing happened to them.

Pakistan was created along with India and look where it is now? Talibans have taken over and now terrorists don’t hide anymore. They open fire and die. How many youth brainwashed for nothing.

Is a piece of land more important than piece of mind?

Yes, most of the points discussed here are valid and very important.
One more thing I must point out which pains me as an ardent cricket fan is that the sport has lost one of its very good team, Pakistan. While they would play at neutral venues,it would never be the same again.
Already the sport doesn’t have too many strong teams when you compare with let’s say football.

there seems to be no control left in the govt’s hands at all…I really doubt if they are capable of dealing with such elemenst with a strong hand..and they are all bluster even now..

Piper:-yes it is damn shocking and yet not shocking at all…one has come to expect this from Pakistan or rather the militant elements in Pakistan..yea,Sri LAnka is in the grip of a civil war itself and yet the cricketers were safe in their own home..and now they have been caught in the middle of some senseless war which they have no idea of..

and yes exactly brainwashed…and you know the intention was to blow up the bus in any way possible..two car bombs have been found, and there are reports of a human bomb too…
Pakistan’s a scary place to be in at any time…

Yes, the attack was horrific and brutal. Pakistan was created by communal politicians on the foundation of fear and insecurity of ‘Hindu’India. The army and the communal politicians spread the hate campaign to consolidate power. The mullah-Army-politician nexus is now undermining the very integrity and sovereignty of the Country.
Here India has a very important lesson to learn. Communal Politicians propagating hate, religious leaders and the Army should never be allowed to come close to political power.

yes this is baffling and eyt when one thinks about it..terrorists have no criteria do they?everyone’s fair game..

and I can understand the angst and what you feel..yeah You and I both know blowing them or anyone up is not the answer..and yet one feels this helpless rage..

this is the difference you see (I am not trying to take the moral highground for Indians)..but India is a mature democracy and Pakistan is not and no matter what they say thats the truth..

Charakan:-yes, a nation founded on a deeep seated insecurity and on the basis of religion…not the best foundation for a democrcay in my mind..
and the ‘hindu’ india that they so feared is still standing and is in fact a SECULAR INDIA IN LETTER AND IN SPIRIT..which makes me glad and relieved..

The absence of a strong leader after Jinnah really didnt help pakistan’s cause..or some belive that Jinnah was not around long enough like Nehru and other leaders in India….Jinnah’s early demise and Pakistani Army being involved in political matters were the start of a downslide that seems to be reaching its conclusion today…

India has very important lessons to learn yes..and I really hope we do..but first concern is to stabilise Pakistan in some manner…or things could deteriorate even further…
a wildfire could engulf or atleast threaten to engulf the whole subcontinental neighbourhood..

Pranab Mukherjee would have been all bluster and Manmohan Singh would have said ‘hum nahin chodenge’ and an eyeball to eyeball confrontation would have taken place…and then when public anger would have died down then things would have been back to square one..

I really doubt that the Indian govt is capable of stepping up to the plate at any time even for India forget Sri Lanka…
